Wisconsin Democracy crisis

GOP fake candidate takes 40-plus point hit
Despite GOP Weasel Shenanigans Shilling
Romps to Victory

Journal Sentinel (7/12/11)

Rep. Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse) cruised to an easy victory Tuesday over the former county Republican Party official who ran against her as a Democrat to delay the final recall election of Sen. Dan Kapanke (R-La Crosse).
Shilling was leading James D. Smith, a La Crosse hospital technician, by some 40 percentage points when the Associated Press declared her a winner.
Shilling, who's been a state legislator for 10 years, will face Kapanke in the general recall election Aug. 9. Kapanke serves an increasingly Democratic-leaning district, and he's been widely reported as being the Republican senator most vulnerable to defeat in a recall election.
Smith, who resigned as a member of the La Crosse County Republican Party before declaring his candidacy as a Democrat, said Tuesday evening that he'd run against Kapanke if he beat Shilling - but first "I'd have to pick my jaw up off the ground," because defeating her was so unlikely.(14)
